Reflection on Khan Academy

Being on both sides of Khan Academy as a student previously and currently learning to use the site as a teacher, I begin to understand the helpfulness of it. Starting Khan Academy as a student was a nightmare when we had it. There were a couple major problems that we ran into, one being the teacher I had and his philosophy on the site; the second problem being with Khan Academy, it would only allow us to do so many problems before it timed us out and stopped our progress. We essentially could only do one section per day of the week, and if you missed too many problems and didn't pass that section, it threw off the whole week's schedule. It really stressed us as students out having to stay up waiting for the timer to run out so we could do the next assignment. I remember staying up until times between 12 A.M- 4. A.M. just trying to get back on track. Often times getting in trouble with my parents and creating a conflict within the household simply trying to do homework. However, that was then and Khan Academy now has fixed this problem as far as I can see and has become much more effective. From the teaching perspective, there are so many benefits it offers. There are many teachers teaching the same lesson, different ways allowing students to understand the concept at hand. Khan Academy allows the teacher to present a concept before class so that students may bring questions into class and we can work through them a different way yet again. Khan Academy would be a great transitional tool to help teachers create a flipped classroom.
